Artist Spotlight - Christian Nicolay

Christian Nicolay is an interdisciplinary artist who uses drawing, sculpture, sound and video as means to explore chaos. Chance and spontaneity play a defining role in all aspects of his art practice, from subject to mark making to choice of materials. Notions of childhood and fun are contrasted with other, often darker undercurrents. Absorbed in the idea of the uncertain, Nicolay explores the relationships between order and chaos, and the unity of opposites.

Christian Nicolay lives and works in Vancouver. He received a BFA with Honors from the Okanagan University College in Kelowna in 2000, and has been the recipient of a number of awards including several Helen Pitt Awards and a Canada Council travel grant. He has exhibited and performed both nationally and abroad.

"My art is about paying attention to systematic confusion.

Everything around us can be understood through systems or chaos. I construct chaos. Making sense out of random chaos may seem absurd. Reality is itself absurd. Move away from the absolute and into the uncertain.

I use chance, accidents, and completely chaotic processes of mark making or finding materials in my work. Day after day I find myself battling with the idea that night and day are opposites, yet they flow in and out of one another everyday."

Special thanks to Christian for donating "In the palm of your hands", 2011 to Unite with Art 2011.

Artist Spotlight - Bill Anderson

The force behind creating Bill Anderson's images was born out of a desire to harmonize elements often avoided in the search for a perfect, or untroubled brand of beauty, and to explore examples of the individual's interaction with the environment. What we're capable of for the sake of profit and industrial progress is well known to the environment, but what motivates the timeless habit of leaving our, often intimate, and primitively creative marks behind on any surface conducive to the task?

With aesthetics being a primary concern, and to overcome the mechanical limitations of a more conventional photographic approach, it was often necessary to re-establish spacial, tonal, and color relationships, by interpreting each important element separately. And so, once reconstructed, the paradoxes of near and far, the manufactured and the organic, the transient and the immutable, combined to create a new context and, hopefully, a heightened sense of place.

Bill Anderson wasborn in Edinburgh, Scotland; he now lives in Victoria, B.C. After spending twenty-five years working with traditional large format photography, and alternative printmaking techniques including Gum Bichromate, Cyanotype, and Platinum, Bill has leveraged the considerable interpretive potential of digital acquisition to realize this portfolio of color work.

Special thanks to Bill for donating: "Yin and Yang of Love", 2008 to Unite with Art.

Artist Spotlight - Davida Kidd

Davida Kidd is a very accomplished artist from Vancouver, Canada, who has received international acclaim for her original and thought provoking multi-media art works. Working primarily with photography as the final means of display, Davida includes her own self-designed fonts and painting as back drop for her photos, as well as installation and sculpture. Though linked to the “Vancouver School” of artists such as Jeff Wall and Rodney Graham, she has, over the course of her career, developed a recognizable style entirely her own, very unlike any other artist working with photography today.

A veteran of more than 150 shows and winner of more than 24 major awards, her work is in more than 40 major collections (and many private collections) around the world in museums and countries as diverse as the important Liu Hai Su Museum in Shanghai, China and the Guangdong Art Museum; Space Group of Korea; Art Form, Mumbai, India; The Royal Canadian Mint: University of Hawaii Collection; Collection of the General Council of Yvelines, Versailles, France; Warner Brothers Pictures, and countless others in countries such as The Ukraine, Bulgaria, Poland, Egypt, and Thailand.

As much as the intrinsic documentary quality and "truth" factor of the photograph has been challenged, it still lends a kind of rational surface, which I enjoy manipulating in order to pull the viewer into my ambiguous narratives."

Davida was recently featured in the Georgia Straight:

Davida Kidd examines the value of art to a society obsessed with consumerism.

Special thanks to Davida for donating: "Zeitgeist", 2010 to Unite with Art.

Artist Spotlight - Gabryel Harrison

Gabryel Harrison was born in New Zealand. The artist now lives and works in Vancouver, B.C. She completed a Fine Arts Degree at the University of Ottawa in 1980, later fulfilling post- graduate requirements to become an art therapist in 1992. Working as an art therapist until 1996, and thereafter in the creative arts field, Harrison has devoted herself to paint full time since 1999.

"I am presently cultivating a garden of grasses and of flowerson the bank of the Fraser River. The composition of my life holds greater unity in this proximity to nature, and in particular, water. Water holds power for me. I choose to live at the edge of the tide. I am part of a place where the river meets the sea, a place of fluid boundaries, currents merging both salt and fresh. I am part of a fugitive space where the moon is midwife to a transitory shore. At this confluence of energies, I am reminded that the line of earth and water is as elusive as memory, as intangible and mysterious as the human journey itself. It is here, through the cultivation of my creativity, that I make effort to be part of the flow of creation, to reveal the truth of my own inner nature.

"My paintings are evocations of states of mind and the constant transformations in the sea of the senses, the ever-changing landscape of the emotions and the mutable mind reflected in the surrounding natural world."

Gabryel is an artist inspired by the common roots of painting and poetry, the rhythmic gesture from heart to line, the inspiration of image, metaphor and symbol. She seeks to honour not to unravel the connection between the outer surface of the world and the inner realm of spirit. Gabryel looks to nature and botanical forms as well as to the historical tradition of vanitas paintings for her motifs and compositions. Her expressions are less about representation than illuminations of inner states of consciousness.

"We see not only with our eyes, but with our mind and our heart. I feel a certain devotion to seeing. I want to see the truth of my own life, to know more deeply my response to the world and of my place in this vast unknowing. It is the process of life I am most interested in not the process of painting".

Working in translucent layers of oil paint, Gabryel sometimes incorporates crushed rose petals or other organic or inorganic matter that becomes a physical carrier of meaning and memory. Gold leaf is occasionally used in symbolic reference to the transmutation of human consciousness- the objective of spiritual alchemy. The artist also explores text, including the physical meditation of inscribing words, phrases and marks into the surface of her paintings. The gesture reinforces her philosophy that words, and the imaginative impulse behind them, have the power to transform reality. The physical acts of painting and of writing is the artist's self-abandonment to the challenge of life's ambiguities, her pleasures, her melancholy, her tenderness and her joys.

Many thanks to Gabryel for donating this piece which will be part of the Live Auction at Unite with Art.

Artist Spotlight - Andre Petterson

Petterson attempts to capture the essence of a split-second in time. His current photography-based work explores various themes of lighting to create elements of mystery. Rembrandt and the Dutch masters’ use of light have strongly influenced Petterson; important elements are highlighted and the mind must fill in the rest. Fabric and movement are also subjects of fascination for the artist. He believes that the integration of movement and fabric are similar to brushstrokes. The chance and artistic freedom involved in motions of dance and similar movements are also reflected in his mixed media work.

Recently, Petterson’s focus has been on painting, photo- based works, steel sculpture, and photography. Music has always been a very important facet of the artist’s life, whether it be playing, composing, or simply appreciating music. He has explored performan

ce art, film and kinetic work involving his own music compositions, set design and choreography.

Petterson has exhibited in both private and public galleries in Canada and the United States. He is the recipient of The National Film Board of Canada Award, and has work featured in numerous private and public collections including Canada Council Art Bank, Canadian Airlines, Vancouver General Hospital, Claridge Investments, Duracell Canada, Esso Resources Canada, Pan-Pacific, Seattle, WA, Polygon Group Ltd., Richmond Public Art, St. Paul’s Hospital, Vancouver, BC, Wall Centre Garden Hotel.

Courtesy of Jennifer Kostuik Gallery.

Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, David Burdeny has degrees in both Interior design and a Masters in Architecture. At the age of 12, Burdeny started to photograph the prairie landscape and make his own black and white prints in a makeshift darkroom that also served as his bedroom closet. Primarily self taught, his architecture and design background greatly influence his penchant for simple exacting photographs of sky, horizon and the marks humankind leaves behind. Burdeny chooses to photograph in poor light and near darkness. He uses unusually long exposures to see what our eyes normally cannot. Burdeny is based in Vancouver, Canada, and has exhibited with the Jennifer Kostuik Gallery since 2001. He has won several gold awards in international art photography competitions, the most recent being selected as International Photographer of the Year amongst 23,000 submissions, revealed at the Lucie Awards Ceremony in New York City, October 2008.

2010 UNICEF - Lullaby

Warning - you will be humming this melody all day long.
No, really - they're still humming it in space, where Lullaby, the new UNICEF anthem, was broadcast late last year, and where sound is notoriously long-lived but hard to hear.
You may have caught Lullaby earlier, on our YouTube channel.
This week's Thursday video brings you the Lullaby reprise. A stunningly gorgeous video bedded with the same swelling theme composed by UNICEF Ambassador Steve Barakatt, "For Every Child" goes out to the children of THIS world - and to the very grounded governments and changemakers who are charged with ensuring the rights enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child.
Enjoy, and feel free to hum along.
